VS Achuthanandan Death: The People’s Comrade Bids Farewell
A Lifelong Crusader for the Common Man
On July 21, 2025, India mourned the loss of a political titan as V.S. Achuthanandan, the last surviving member of the original CPI(M) politburo, breathed his last at the age of 101. Born into a humble background as a coir factory worker, he rose to become one of the most respected leaders in Kerala’s political history.
Achuthanandan remained a fierce advocate of the marginalized, tirelessly fighting corruption, land encroachment, and environmental degradation throughout his career. His image as a fearless reformer earned him immense popularity, especially among the youth and working-class.
His Political Legacy: From Activist to CM
A founding member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Achuthanandan was a key architect of Kerala’s progressive politics. Despite internal party rifts and multiple setbacks, he became the 11th Chief Minister of Kerala from 2006 to 2011, at the age of 82.
As CM, he championed transparency, clamped down on land mafia operations, and launched aggressive anti-corruption drives. His policies in education, public health, and IT development laid a strong foundation for Kerala’s modern governance.
A Life Rooted in Simplicity
Even while holding the highest office, Achuthanandan lived a simple life. He often cycled to meetings in his early years and never lost touch with his modest beginnings. Many Keralites affectionately referred to him as “VS Ettan” (Brother VS), reflecting his deep emotional connect with the masses.
He was widely respected across party lines for his integrity, grit, and uncompromising stand on issues that mattered to the people.
Tributes Pour In from Across the Nation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, and several others paid rich tributes to Achuthanandan.
“His contribution to Indian politics, especially Kerala, is unparalleled,” tweeted the Prime Minister.
A state funeral with full honors will be held, and the Kerala government has declared three days of mourning.
