Shocking Assault at Public Event

On August 6, 2025, former UP minister and Lok Morcha chief Swami Prasad Maurya faced a shocking attack during a welcome event at Saras Crossing in Raebareli. A man pretending to honor him with a garland suddenly slapped him from behind. Maurya’s supporters reacted swiftly, overpowering and handing the attacker to the police.

This shocking moment, captured on video and widely circulated online, triggered massive outrage. The footage sparked conversations around political security, especially in highly polarized regions like Uttar Pradesh.

Police Act Swiftly

Circle Officer (Sadar) Amit Singh confirmed that authorities detained two individuals shortly after the incident. Preliminary inquiries revealed that the attacker cited Maurya’s past remarks on Hindu scriptures, including the Ramcharitmanas, as his motive.

Although the police haven’t received an official complaint yet, officials assured that a formal FIR would be registered once submitted. Moreover, the police emphasized their commitment to maintaining law and order, especially during politically charged events.

Maurya Blames Yogi Government

Reacting strongly to the attack, Maurya criticized Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s administration for allegedly encouraging such lawless behavior. “If goons can attack me in the presence of police, imagine what they can do in their absence,” Maurya said, accusing the Karni Sena of operating with political protection.

He further announced that his party, Lok Morcha, would contest the 2027 elections under the slogan “BJP Hatao, UP Bachao” (“Remove BJP, Save UP”), emphasizing the need to restore democratic safety in the state.

Wider Political Repercussions

The attack has drawn widespread condemnation. Azad Samaj Party leader Chandra Shekhar Azad labeled it a cowardly act that threatened democratic principles. Given Maurya’s controversial statements on caste and religion, right-wing groups like the Karni Sena have long targeted him.

This incident follows a shoe-throwing episode in 2024, underscoring a disturbing trend of violence in Uttar Pradesh’s volatile political climate. With elections nearing, tensions between rival parties continue to escalate.
