Indian Railways Launches CCTV Installation Drive on Coaches
Indian Railways will begin fitting CCTV cameras in coaches throughout its passenger train network. This strategic move seeks to enhance onboard safety, deter criminal activities, and reassure passengers during all phases of their journey.
Scope and Rollout Plan
-
Pilot Phase: Several long-distance and suburban trains will receive cameras first.
-
System Setup: Each coach will feature multiple cameras covering entrances, aisles, and seating areas.
-
Monitoring: Live feeds will connect to onboard systems and may link with platform security centers during station stops.
Passenger Safety Gains
By introducing surveillance, authorities expect to deter thefts, molestation, and vandalism, especially during off-peak hours and when trains are sparsely occupied. Furthermore, recorded footage will play a crucial role during investigations.
Additional Rail Safety Measures
In addition to CCTV installations, Railways plans to:
-
Increase patrols by RPF and GRP officers, especially on overnight and lesser-used routes
-
Distribute safety alert information through mobile apps and digital noticeboards
-
Upgrade lighting and emergency response systems in all coaches
Official Remarks
Rail Ministry officials emphasize that this initiative reflects the government’s commitment to boosting passenger confidence. They assert that visible safety infrastructure can make railway travel safer and more inviting.
