Philippines Assert Dominance in T20I Tri-Series Opener

JAKARTA, INDONESIA – The Philippines cricket team began their campaign in the Indonesia T20I Tri-Series 2025 (also part of the Men’s T20WC Sub-Regional EAP Qualifier B) with an emphatic 7-wicket win over South Korea in the second match of the tournament. Played on July 6, 2025, the victory underscored the Philippines’ aggressive intent and strong all-round performance.

Winning the toss and electing to bat first, South Korea struggled to build any significant partnerships against a disciplined Philippines bowling attack. They were eventually bowled out for a meager 80 runs in 19.4 overs, falling short of completing their full quota of 20 overs. The Philippines bowlers maintained tight lines and lengths, consistently picking up wickets and stifling South Korea’s scoring rate.

Sirah’s Stellar Knock Anchors Philippines’ Chase

In response, the Philippines started their chase with purpose, despite losing three wickets. The chase was spearheaded by a brilliant innings from Amanpreet Sirah, who was deservedly named Player of the Match. Sirah’s impactful 38 runs off just 32 balls, including three fours and two towering sixes, set the tone for the chase and ensured the momentum remained firmly with the Philippines.

Supporting Sirah’s effort, Miggy Podosky contributed a valuable 17 runs, laying a solid foundation. As the innings progressed, Andrew Donovan provided the finishing touches with an unbeaten 18 runs, guiding his team comfortably across the finish line. The Philippines reached the target of 81 in just 10.1 overs, demonstrating their attacking mindset and efficiency in the middle.

Bowlers Shine for Both Sides

While the South Korean batting lineup faltered, their bowlers did show flashes of individual brilliance. Saurabh Kumar was the most economical and effective, picking up one wicket for just 8 runs. Bilal Ahmad Mir also contributed with a wicket, conceding only 5 runs. However, the low total meant their efforts were insufficient to turn the tide against a determined Philippines batting order.

This convincing victory provides the Philippines with a strong start in the Tri-Series and the T20 World Cup Qualifiers. It sends a clear message to their competitors about their capabilities and aspirations in the tournament. South Korea, on the other hand, will need to reassess their batting strategy and look for improvements in their upcoming matches to stay competitive in the series. The tournament promises more exciting cricket as teams battle for supremacy and a spot in the next stage of the T20 World Cup qualifiers.
