Mumbai Rains Bring Chaos: Roads Flooded, Andheri Subway Closed
Non-Stop Showers Disrupt Daily Life
On July 21, intense monsoon rain swept through Mumbai, flooding major roads and railway tracks. Water levels rose quickly in areas like Andheri, Dadar, Kurla, and Sion, making movement extremely difficult. Officials closed the Andheri subway after floodwaters submerged it completely.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert, warning that more rain could drench the city in the coming days.
Waterlogging Leads to Traffic Gridlock
Flooded roads caused major traffic jams across the Western Express Highway, SV Road, and Eastern Freeway. BEST diverted several buses, while others remained stuck for hours. Drivers and commuters spent long hours in traffic as the rainwater slowed movement across the city.
The Mumbai Traffic Police used social media to update routes and advised drivers to avoid waterlogged zones and use alternate paths instead.
Schools Close as BMC Activates Response Teams
In low-lying regions, some schools suspended classes to ensure student safety. The BMC deployed workers to clean drains, pump out water, and clear debris from flooded roads. Civic officials also removed fallen trees from key intersections.
Despite monsoon preparedness plans, Mumbai’s outdated drainage systems struggled to manage the volume of rainwater, once again raising concerns about infrastructure readiness.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation and have assured timely updates. Mumbaikars are urged to follow official advisories and remain cautious amid the unpredictable weather.
