Cash Discovery Row: Piles of Notes Found in Justice Varma’s Burnt Storeroom

An inquiry committee has unearthed a shocking twist in the ongoing cash recovery case. Bundles of currency notes were discovered in the charred remains of a storeroom belonging to Justice R.K. Varma, raising serious concerns and triggering legal scrutiny.

In a stunning revelation, an inquiry committee report has confirmed the discovery of large stacks of currency notes in the burnt-down storeroom of former High Court judge Justice R.K. Varma. The cash was found amid the debris following a mysterious fire that broke out at Varma’s private residence last month.

Sources within the panel confirmed that the money, mostly in high denomination notes, was partially charred but identifiable, and appeared to have been stored in bulk. The incident, now labeled the “Cash Discovery Row”, has sparked intense debate in judicial and political circles, with calls for a full-blown investigation.

“The presence of such a large sum of unexplained cash in a private storeroom, especially one owned by a retired judge, cannot be overlooked. This is a matter of public trust,” said a member of the inquiry committee.

The report also questioned the timing and cause of the fire, which destroyed key sections of the house — particularly the room where the cash was discovered. While initial reports cited a short circuit as the likely cause, officials are now not ruling out deliberate sabotage or tampering.

     Key Findings from the Report:

  • Currency bundles discovered in sealed metal trunks

  • No official record of the cash declared in assets by Justice Varma

  • Fire appeared to originate in the cash-storing area

  • No CCTV footage available due to power failure during the incident

  • Chemical accelerants found in debris samples (pending lab confirmation)

So far, Justice Varma has denied any wrongdoing, stating that the storeroom was used to store old case files and unused household items. His legal team has dismissed the committee’s tone as “speculative” and “politically motivated.”

However, retired bureaucrats and members of the bar association have demanded a judicial inquiry, citing the need to preserve the sanctity of the judiciary.

The case has caught national attention, especially with social media users posting speculative images and theories regarding the source of the cash. Officials have warned the public against circulating unverified information.

Meanwhile, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Income Tax Department are reportedly preparing to launch parallel probes to trace the origin and legality of the money.
