Indore Becomes First Indian City to Launch QR-Based Digital Addresses

Indore Leads the Way in Urban Innovation

In a landmark move toward smart city advancement, Indore has made history by becoming the first city in India to implement a QR code-based digital address system. This forward-thinking initiative is designed to solve age-old problems like confusing addresses, lack of standardized locations, and inefficiencies in public service delivery.

Under this new system, each home, shop, and public building is being assigned a unique digital address embedded with a QR code. Once scanned, the QR reveals accurate geolocation, making it easier for emergency services, couriers, and visitors to find the exact location with precision.

How the Digital Address System Works

The QR code acts as a gateway to a digital identity for each property. Residents and business owners can affix the codes outside their premises. When scanned using a smartphone, the QR links to an app or municipal database that shows the geo-tagged location along with essential property details.

This solution was developed in collaboration with Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) and leading tech firms, aligning with the Smart Cities Mission of the Indian government.

Benefits for Residents and Services

  • Faster Emergency Response: Ambulances and fire services can now reach exact locations faster.

  • Efficient Postal and Delivery Services: Couriers no longer have to rely on unclear directions or landmarks.

  • Better Civic Planning: Municipal authorities can use digital data for infrastructure upgrades, sanitation mapping, and property taxation.

  • Digital Inclusion: Citizens, especially in informal settlements, can now have a digital presence, improving access to banking, health, and government schemes
