India’s Push Towards Electric Freight Mobility

In a bold step toward decarbonizing the transport sector, India has introduced its first incentive scheme for electric trucks, signaling a major policy shift. The government plans to support the deployment of approximately 5,600 electric trucks across logistics, steel, cement, and other sectors.

Incentive Highlights

  • Financial Incentives: Buyers can receive subsidies ranging from ₹2.7 lakh to ₹9.6 lakh, depending on the battery capacity or 10% of the ex-factory price, whichever is lower.

  • Eligibility: Applies to N2 (3.5–12 tonne) and N3 (12–55 tonne) category trucks.

  • Conditions: Customers must retire an old diesel truck and purchase new vehicles backed by at least 5-year battery and motor warranties.

Sectoral Impact & Goals

The scheme aims to lower carbon emissions, reduce logistics costs, and promote sustainability in freight transport. Major public and private sector firms are expected to adopt electric trucks for daily operations, with many already planning large-scale orders.

Focus on Urban Pollution

A portion of the fund—₹100 crore—is specifically allocated for cities like Delhi to address urban air pollution. This segment of the scheme will deploy over 1,000 electric trucks in densely populated regions.

Manufacturing & Infrastructure

The government is encouraging domestic production of e-trucks and related components. This policy will also stimulate the expansion of EV charging infrastructure, especially on freight corridors and in industrial zones.

Future Outlook

The e-truck incentive scheme is a game-changer for India’s clean mobility agenda. It not only promotes environmental sustainability but also boosts the logistics industry’s economic efficiency. If supported by infrastructure growth and industry adoption, it can redefine freight transportation in India.
