Geopolymer Mix Replaces Traditional Cement
To begin with, IIT Indore’s civil engineering team created cement-free concrete by using industrial byproducts like fly ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS). These substances form a geopolymer, which not only delivers high compressive strength but also cures faster. As a result, the process eliminates the need for conventional cement and significantly reduces environmental damage.
Reduced Cost, Higher Strength
Moreover, this new concrete formula lowers construction costs by nearly 20% while maintaining strong performance metrics. Unlike traditional methods, it cures without water. Therefore, it becomes an ideal option for water-scarce regions, supporting both cost-efficiency and conservation.

Ideal for Rapid Infrastructure Projects
Notably, the concrete achieves over 80 MPa of strength within just three days. Hence, it fits perfectly in time-sensitive projects like military bunkers, highways, railway installations, and emergency shelters, where traditional cement would delay progress.
A Green Leap Toward Carbon Reduction
Furthermore, cement manufacturing contributes roughly 8% of global CO₂ emissions. By eliminating cement entirely, this geopolymer-based concrete reduces carbon emissions by up to 80%, making it a pivotal step toward climate-friendly construction practices in India and beyond.
Research Team’s Vision
Led by Prof. Suhas Joshi and Dr. Abhishek Rajput, the IIT Indore research team envisions redefining infrastructure development through low-emission, cost-effective building materials. In fact, they have already filed patents and aim to collaborate with industry players to implement this innovation on a national scale.
