Hariyali Amavasya marks the new moon day during the holy month of Sawan, symbolizing both spiritual cleansing and environmental awareness. The word “Hariyali” denotes greenery, making this Amavasya a time to worship nature, honor ancestors, and perform religious donations (daan) for peace and prosperity.
People observe this day especially in North Indian states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Bihar. As the name suggests, this day also promotes the planting of trees and nature worship.

Puja Vidhi and Rituals for the Day
On Hariyali Amavasya, devotees wake up early and bathe in holy rivers or at home. Afterward, they worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati by offering bilva leaves, white flowers, raw milk, and gangajal. Some also plant trees or distribute saplings.
Women observe fasts and pray for the longevity and well-being of their families. They also tie sacred threads (mouli) on peepal or banyan trees while chanting mantras.
