Gurugram Faces Deluge, Work-From-Home Advisory Issued
A severe downpour struck Gurugram overnight, flooding key intersections and arterial roads across the city. Between 7 p.m. on July 9 and 7 a.m. on July 10, the city witnessed over 130 mm of rainfall—103 mm of which fell in just 90 minutes. The sudden cloudburst led to widespread waterlogging, bringing traffic to a standstill in multiple sectors and affecting daily life.
Orange Alert and Remote Work Recommendation
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an Orange Alert for the region early on July 10, warning of continued rain and thunderstorms throughout the day. In response, the Gurugram District Disaster Management Authority issued a public advisory, recommending that all private institutions and corporate offices switch to remote work for the day.
The advisory is aimed at minimizing traffic congestion and ensuring commuter safety as several major roads, including MG Road, Sohna Road, NH-8, and Subhash Chowk, remain submerged or heavily blocked.
Infrastructure Struggles Under Pressure
Despite repeated monsoon preparedness efforts, Gurugram’s drainage infrastructure continues to underperform. Key areas such as Sector 30, Hero Honda Chowk, and Golf Course Road were severely affected, with reports of stranded vehicles and emergency services delayed due to road conditions.
Social media was flooded with photos and videos of floating cars and waterlogged streets, sparking criticism of the city’s ability to manage monsoon rains. The situation resembled urban flooding seen in previous years, raising questions about long-term flood control planning.
Steps Taken and Further Caution
Municipal authorities have deployed pump systems and emergency teams in the worst-hit zones. Commuters have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and stay indoors as a precaution. Additional rainfall is forecast for the coming 48 hours, and authorities warn that further waterlogging may occur.
Public transport has been disrupted, and ride-hailing services reported surges and cancellations due to road conditions. Essential services remain operational, but delays are expected.
