Delhi, June 9 – A tragic fire engulfed a residential high-rise in Delhi’s Dwarka Sector 22 early Sunday morning, claiming the lives of four family members who jumped from their balcony in a desperate attempt to escape the blaze.
According to officials, the fire originated in the fourth-floor apartment of the apartment complex around 2:30 AM, quickly spreading smoke and panic through the building. The deceased include a couple and their two children, who were unable to find an alternate escape route and chose to jump from their fifth-floor balcony.
The Delhi Fire Services (DFS) received a call at 2:45 AM and rushed seven fire tenders to the site. Firefighters managed to douse the flames after several hours, but by then, the family had already leapt to their deaths. “They were trapped by thick smoke and rising flames. Despite our swift response, it was too late to prevent the fatalities,” said DFS Chief Atul Garg.

Initial investigations suggest the fire may have started due to an electrical short circuit, but forensic teams are conducting a detailed examination. The building’s fire safety mechanisms, including alarms and extinguishers, are also under scrutiny. Residents allege that the building lacked proper fire exits and functioning alarms, raising concerns over negligence and safety violations.
Local authorities have launched an inquiry, and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal expressed deep sorrow over the loss. “This is a heartbreaking incident. Immediate steps will be taken to ensure fire safety norms are enforced in all high-rise buildings,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).
In addition to the four fatalities, several other residents were treated for smoke inhalation at nearby hospitals, though their conditions remain stable. Emergency evacuation measures saved dozens of others from the blaze.
The tragedy has reignited debate over fire preparedness in densely populated urban localities like Dwarka, where high-rises continue to mushroom without adequate compliance to fire safety guidelines.
