Rahul Gandhi Targets Election Commission Over Poll Conduct

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has reignited a national debate by alleging voter fraud in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He claimed that at least 15 seats were rigged and accused the Election Commission of India (ECI) of losing its independence. According to Gandhi, the ECI has been “obliterated and taken over.”

He pointed fingers at electronic voting machines (EVMs), suggesting they were misused to manipulate results. Although Gandhi did not present concrete evidence, his statements have gained significant attention. Many opposition voices are now echoing concerns about transparency in India’s electoral process.

Poll Body Denies Charges, Calls Them Baseless

The Election Commission swiftly dismissed the allegations. It said Gandhi’s claims are factually incorrect and misleading. The ECI asserted that the elections were free, fair, and transparent, following all required procedures.

An official statement highlighted the use of VVPATs, random audits, and legal oversight. The Commission warned that such accusations could erode public trust in democratic institutions.

BJP and Opposition React Differently

The BJP slammed Gandhi’s remarks. Party leaders said that the Congress must accept defeat and stop attacking independent institutions. They labeled his comments as irresponsible and misleading.

However, reactions across the opposition bloc were mixed. Some parties cautiously supported a call for transparency. Others avoided taking a strong stance, likely to prevent a direct clash with the ECI.

Renewed Demand for Electoral Reform

Gandhi’s statement has revived the demand for electoral reforms. Critics are again questioning the use of EVMs over ballot papers. Civil society groups have called for independent audits, real-time VVPAT counting, and stronger accountability from the ECI.

Experts suggest this issue could become a major political talking point ahead of state elections. It may also lead to legislative debates about electoral safeguards.

Possible Legal Challenge Ahead

So far, Gandhi has not taken any legal steps. But if his claims reach the Supreme Court, the case could set new benchmarks in electoral jurisprudence. The Court has previously addressed similar petitions on EVM integrity and vote-counting transparency.
