Met department warns of downpours in multiple coastal, interior regions today
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall warning for 12 districts in Tamil Nadu today, including Chennai, Villupuram, and Cuddalore. 12 Districts Under Alert
The IMD predicted intense rainfall in parts of Tamil Nadu such as Chennai, Thanjavur, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore, and Ramanathapuram. Moreover, it expects rain to continue intermittently throughout the day, driven by upper air circulation in the Bay of Bengal.

Coastal Regions May See Flooding
Fishermen have received warnings to avoid venturing into the sea. Meanwhile, authorities in low-lying coastal areas have prepared for waterlogging. Chennai Corporation has deployed additional pumps in flood-prone areas to handle excess runoff. Tamil Nadu rain alert.
Strong Winds & Thunderstorms Expected
In addition to heavy rains, thunderstorms and strong winds are likely in two districts: Virudhunagar and Thoothukudi. As a result, officials urge residents to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.

Thoothukudi and Virudhunagar to Face Wind Gusts
Apart from coastal showers, Virudhunagar and Thoothukudi may experience thunderstorms, lightning, and wind speeds exceeding 40–50 km/h. The IMD has recommended unplugging electronics, sheltering indoors, and preparing for short power outages in these areas.
Urban Infrastructure May Face Pressure
With previous episodes of waterlogging in Chennai and Cuddalore, municipal officials are actively clearing storm drains and keeping emergency personnel on standby. As a precaution, schools in rain-affected districts may remain shut, depending on local rainfall intensity. Commuters have been advised to use public transport where possible and avoid low-lying underpasses.
