‘Ramayana’: An Indian Epic with an Unprecedented ₹4000 Crore Budget
Indore, Madhya Pradesh – Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming magnum opus, ‘Ramayana,’ is making headlines for its colossal scale. Producer Namit Malhotra recently confirmed its budget. The film, starring Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram and Yash as Ravan, will cost an astounding ₹4000 crore (approximately $500 million) across its two parts. This makes it by far the most expensive Indian film ever produced, setting a new benchmark for the industry.
A Vision of Grandeur: Malhotra’s Ambitious Project
Namit Malhotra, CEO of Prime Focus, shared details about this ambitious project. He revealed that people initially thought he was “crazy” when he started planning it six or seven years ago. No Indian film had ever approached such a massive budget. However, Malhotra is self-funding the project. He emphasized that they are “not taking anybody’s money.” For him, ‘Ramayana’ is more than just a film. It is a “lifetime project” aimed at presenting India’s rich spiritual and cultural heritage to the world. He believes they are making “the largest film in the world for the greatest story.”
Malhotra’s extensive experience in Hollywood, working on VFX for blockbusters like ‘Inception’ and ‘Dune,’ underpins his vision. He believes that even with a ₹4000 crore budget, ‘Ramayana’ will be “cheaper” than some of the biggest Hollywood productions of similar scale. The aim is to create a globally respected Indian cinematic experience.
Star-Studded Cast and Release Plans
The film boasts a stellar cast to bring this epic to life. Ranbir Kapoor will portray Lord Ram. Popular South Indian actor Yash takes on the role of Ravan. Sai Pallavi has been cast as Sita. Sunny Deol will appear as Lord Hanuman. Other prominent actors like Amitabh Bachchan are also reportedly part of the ensemble.
Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, known for films like ‘Dangal,’ ‘Ramayana’ is planned as a two-part cinematic event. Part One is slated for a grand release during Diwali 2026. Part Two will follow a year later, during Diwali 2027.

Technological Advancements and Global Appeal
The production is leveraging cutting-edge technology to achieve its grand vision. It will be a VFX-heavy project, with Prime Focus (Malhotra’s company) handling the visual effects. The film is being crafted for an immersive IMAX experience. Furthermore, ‘Ramayana’ will reportedly feature AI dubbing technology. This innovative feature will allow seamless viewing in multiple regional languages, a first for Indian cinema on this scale.
The ambition extends to its musical score as well. Oscar-winning composers Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman are collaborating on the film’s music. This marks Zimmer’s debut in a Bollywood project, further enhancing the film’s global appeal. The combination of an iconic story, a celebrated cast, world-class direction, and groundbreaking technology positions ‘Ramayana’ to be a landmark achievement in Indian cinema. It aims not only to break box office records but also to showcase Indian mythology and storytelling to a global audience with unprecedented grandeur.
