Thane Civic Body Fined ₹102 Crore Over Mangrove Destruction

Illegal Garbage Dumping in Diva Damages Environment, Triggers Massive Penalty

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) imposed a hefty ₹102 crore fine on the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) for dumping garbage illegally in Diva, which destroyed protected mangrove forests. This action marks one of Maharashtra’s strictest penalties for ecological violations in recent history.

Authorities Dump Waste on Mangrove Land in Diva

The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) landed in serious legal trouble after the National Green Tribunal (NGT) fined it ₹102 crore. TMC dumped solid waste directly on mangrove land in Diva, severely damaging the fragile ecosystem.

Environmental watchdogs and local residents consistently raised alarms about the violations. They pushed for an investigation, which revealed that TMC’s actions disrupted the natural drainage system and destroyed large stretches of legally protected mangrove forests under the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) rules.

NGT Penalizes TMC for Ignoring Environmental Laws

The NGT held TMC accountable for failing to manage its waste responsibly. The tribunal’s report stated that TMC repeatedly violated the Environment Protection Act and earlier NGT rulings.

The tribunal directed TMC to pay ₹102 crore, which authorities will use to restore mangrove habitats and implement environmental rehabilitation in the affected region. The NGT also ordered the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) to enforce strict waste management protocols across Thane.

Residents and Activists Applaud the Ruling

Local activists, who battled illegal dumping for years, praised the NGT’s decision. “This ruling sets a strong precedent,” said one environmental lawyer who led the petition. “It proves that even government bodies must obey environmental laws.”

Citizens of Diva consistently complained about worsening air pollution, foul odors, and recurring floods—direct consequences of mangrove destruction. Now, they expect tighter monitoring and meaningful reforms in TMC’s waste management policies.
