Priya Nair Breaks the Glass Ceiling: Becomes HUL’s First Woman CEO
In a historic leadership transition, Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL) has appointed Priya Nair as its first-ever woman CEO, succeeding Rohit Jawa, who will move on to global responsibilities within Unilever. This marks a pivotal moment not only for HUL’s 92-year-old legacy but also for the broader Indian corporate sector, where female leadership at the top is still rare.
Priya Nair, who currently serves as the Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) and Executive Director of HUL’s Beauty & Personal Care segment, brings with her over 30 years of experience in brand building, innovation, and strategic leadership.
An Inspirational Career Journey
A graduate of Lady Shri Ram College (LSR) and IIM Ahmedabad, Nair began her journey with HUL in the early 1990s. Over the years, she played a crucial role in the success of iconic brands such as Dove, Lifebuoy, Lux, and Sunsilk. Her ability to blend consumer insights with global market trends earned her recognition as a key architect of HUL’s beauty portfolio growth.
Notably, she also spearheaded Project Shakti, HUL’s rural women empowerment initiative that became a case study in inclusive business models.
Leadership with a Vision
In her first official statement, Priya Nair said:
“It’s a privilege and an honor to lead HUL into its next chapter. We will continue to build brands that matter and grow responsibly with our consumers and communities.”
Her focus is expected to be on digital transformation, sustainability, and inclusive innovation, aligning with Unilever’s global vision while customizing for India’s dynamic market.
Corporate India Reacts
The announcement was met with praise across industry circles. Business leaders and gender equity advocates hailed it as a major leap for women in leadership roles. Social media users also celebrated her journey, with hashtags like #PriyaNair and #WomenInLeadership trending on X and LinkedIn.
Meanwhile, outgoing CEO Rohit Jawa thanked the HUL team and expressed confidence in Nair’s leadership:
“Priya is a visionary with a deep understanding of our brands and consumers. She is the right person to lead HUL forward.”
