The Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC) and Animal Welfare Board acted swiftly on the complaint. Officials visited the residence, located in a densely populated residential locality, and confirmed the overpopulation of animals in cramped conditions. As a result, three cats were seized, and veterinary care was arranged for them.
Residents had reportedly endured months of disturbance caused by the excessive number of pets in the household. According to sources, many neighbors had previously appealed to the couple to reduce the number of animals, but no action was taken, forcing them to escalate the issue.
Officials said the couple did not possess any registration or license for operating what had effectively become an unregistered shelter. Under animal welfare and municipal health guidelines, keeping more than a set number of pets without approval is prohibited. Authorities are now exploring legal actions against the couple under provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and public nuisance regulations.
The KMC has urged residents to report any similar cases of illegal pet hoarding to the civic body. Authorities are also expected to conduct further inspections in the area to identify potential violations involving animals being kept in unhealthy or unlawful conditions.
